Barstow Acres Children’s Center was founded in Calvert County, MD in 2003 by Sonia Hinds. It is our aim to provide mental health services, developmental and enrichment programs for at-risk children, adults, and families. Barstow Acres Children’s Center fills the gap in treatment for young children, starting at the age of three where child-centered play therapy is used as the primary modality. We offer individual, group, and family therapy. The other services provided are social skills groups for children with ADHD, anger issues, and autism spectrum disorders. Groups also include a self-esteem group for teens and a Therapeutic Summer Day Camp which has been in existence for the past ten years. We also provide parent training using Adlerian model.
Enrichment programs for the community include our Annual Parent Empowerment Conference which brings together parents and professionals to learn about current mental health issues.
Mental health professionals may also obtain continuing education units for licensure renewal.
Additionally, we provide internships to college graduates and high school students, as well as Master’s level psychology majors.
