Air Force Aid Society

Interest-free loans and grants are for short term or one-time emergencies such as food, rent and utilities.  Also helps with car repair and emergency travel requirements. Each case, regardless of the request, is treated individually, and the society will review all requests for assistance and try to help if the assistance falls within the general thrust of the AFAS charter.

Other programs such as “Give Parents a Break” enable base officials to offer periodic child care at specified evening and weekend times. This is particularly helpful when a spouse is deployed, or other personal emergencies occur.  Other programs such as Bundles for Babies, Car Care Because We Care and Child Care for PCS are currently available at many bases. The Society also offers the Spouse Employment Program and the Heart Link Spouse Orientation Program.

General Henry “Hap” Arnold Education Grant Program helps offset some higher education expenses by providing grants of $500 to $4000 to dependent children and spouses.  Grants may be used toward payment of tuition, books and fees or other direct education expenses.  The program is based upon financial need. Students must apply annually.  The Society’s Education Fund also supports other education programs such as our Merit Scholarship of $5000 to at least 10 qualifying incoming freshmen and our Supplemental Education Loan Program.

Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society provides several programs and services to assist active duty and retired Sailors, Marines and their families in financial need including Quick Assist loans, funds for emergency travel and disaster relief services, Budget for Baby workshops, scholarships and interest-free loans. 

Scholarships and interest-free education loans are awarded once per academic year. Scholarships range from $500-$3,000 and loans are available up to $4,000. Awards are determined by FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) and tuition costs. Funds are provided directly to the institution to help pay for tuition, books, room and board. Students may reapply each year. Applications are accepted March 1-May 15.

Unmet Needs helps eligible service members and their families with unexpected expenses resulting from deployment or other military-related activity or injury. The program provides financial assistance up to $2,500 for daily necessities in the form of a grant – not a loan – so no repayment is required. Child Care Scholarship Program

The Child Care Scholarship (CCS) (formerly known as Child Care Subsidy) Program provides financial assistance with child care costs to eligible working families in Maryland. The program is managed through a centralized vendor -- Child Care Subsidy Central (CCS Central).

Participants must be:

• A Maryland resident who is working/employed in an approved training program or attending school. For families where both parents live within the same household, both parents must meet all eligibility requirements. 

• A recipient of Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or within CCS income guidelines (see below).

• Willing to have your child immunized to Maryland state standards or provide documentation supporting Exemption from Immunization. 

• Pursuing child support, if both parents do not live within the same household composition. 

• Willing to provide proof that each child needing child care is a citizen of the United States or a qualified alien. (Provide a Birth Certificate for each child or documentation that certifies the child's status.)   NOTE: Parents ARE NOT required to be citizens of the United States. 

• Willing to provide proof of identity for all members within the household composition. (Proof of identity for the parent can be any form of a government issued document. The birth certificate or immigration status documentation can serve as proof of identity for each child in the household composition.) 

• Willing to provide a Photo I.D. (Only required of the head of households.)  

• An individual who is younger than 13 years old who is not disabled, or an individual younger than 19 years old who is disabled.

Maryland Accessible Homes for Seniors

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development offers a program for accessibility related improvements to the homes of seniors. These improvements may include, among others, the installation of grab bars and railings, widening of doorways and installation of ramps. Home improvements such as these represent for many older people are the key to remaining in their home and maintaining their independence.

The program provides zero percent interest, deferred loans for a term of 30 years to finance accessibility improvements for seniors 55 and older. The funds may only be used to pay for the actual costs of making the home accessible or functional for the resident.

Participants must:

• Be a Maryland resident with at least one resident 55 years of age or older
• Own and occupy the home to be renovated as their principal residence (seniors living with relatives will be considered on a case by case basis)
• Reside in a home that is structurally sound and free of health and safety hazards
• Not have any outstanding federal or state tax liens, open bankruptcy or foreclosure
• Meet income requirements

Provides programs that offer specialized supportive services to our nation’s combat wounded heroes and gold star families. Programs focus on home and vehicle ownership, outdoor recreation, life skills, financial education and leadership development, including "Skills4Life," "Leadership4Life," and "Hope4Life" personal development programs.

The foundation has awarded over 900 mortgage-free and gift-tax free homes as well as over 130 payment-free vehicles to Wounded Heroes and Gold Star Families, in all 50 States. In addition to the homes or vehicles, the families receive financial literacy training; three years for home recipients and one year for vehicle recipients.

Applications accepted between Feb. 1 and March 31 each year. All applications must be completed and submitted using our online application portal.  

Scholarships cover unmet needs including the portion of tuition, fees, on-campus dormitory housing (higher education), meal plans (higher education) and required textbooks for the term that are not covered by other sources of awards or financial aid. When determining unmet need for higher education students, we do not consider loans or work-study as financial aid.

Green Beret Foundation

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit. For Green Berets wounded or injured while deployed or in training, the foundations sends a $2,500 check and essential gear for a temporary hospital stay that is packed in a Special Forces-grade backpack and ensure that key family members are at the soldier’s bedside. Provides financial support for family members’ travel not covered by the Army and support for other family needs such as child-care, pet kenneling and fuel cards. Help ship privately owned vehicles to the military treatment facility if required. 

Supplements Military Health System (MHS) and Veterans Health Administration (VA) care to ensure total wellness for the Green Beret. Examples include:

The Next Ridgeline program provides current and former transitioning Green Berets with the tools and resources that they need to be successful in new careers, while the VA Benefits and Claims Program provides them with pre-transition briefings and assists with VA Disability Claims.
